Sumo Bots 2024
On Thursday March 7th, 2024 both San Rafael and Canyon View Middle Schools competed in Sumo Bot competition. There were 4 teams from San Rafael Middle School and 6 teams from Canyon View Middle School that competed for the title. In the end Canyon View Middle School took home first place with a team of all 6th grades. 
 
 
 
 

 
2024 Spelling Bee CHAMPION

This year's champion is an 8th grader at Mont Harmon Middle School. Cadi won the competition after twenty-three rounds of intense spelling challenges. Her final winning word was disjunct.
As the champion, Heaton received a trophy, and an all expense paid trip for two to the 2024 Scripps National Spelling Bee Week, in Washington, DC., along with The Samuel Louis Sugarman Award, 1 year of Britannica Online Premium and one year of Merriam-Webster unabridged online subscriptions.

Mont Harmon Eighth Grader wins 2024 SESC Regional Spelling Bee

After twenty-three rounds of intense spelling challenges, Mont Harmon Middle School 8th grader Cadi Heaton, emerged as the first place winner in this year’s SESC Regional Spelling Bee. The spelling bee was held at Green River High School on March 11, 2024.  Second place went to 5th grader Ollie Jeppesen, from Blanding Elementary, who battled Miss Heaton for eleven rounds until misspelling the word catalyst.  Heaton’s winning word was disjunct. Third place was captured by Margaret L. Hopkins 7th grader, Niomi Kelly.

The top three Carbon, Emery, Grand and San Juan District, plus Pinnacle Academy spellers, grades 4 through 8, advanced to the Region Bee from their local school and district bees held earlier this year.  The spelling was overseen by pronouncer Jessie Magleby, Grand County Public Library, and SESC judges Johnna Boyack and JoLynn Torgerson.

As the champion, Heaton received a trophy, an all-expense paid trip for two to the 2024 Scripps National Spelling Bee Week, along with The Samuel Louis Sugarman Award. 1 year of Britannica Online Premium and access to valuable online study resources. Second and third place spellers received a trophy, and all other participants received a plaque of recognition for making it to the regional bee. The 2024 Scripps Spelling Bee will be held in Washington D.C. from May 26th to June 1st.

  • Emery District spellers were Maxwell Sorenson – San Rafael Middle 8th grade, Joleene Keisel – Canyon View Middle 7th grade and AnnaBelle Jeffs – Castle Dale Elementary 5th grade
  • Grand District spellers were Flint Lugers – Margaret L. Hopkin Middle 8th, Niomi Kelly – Margaret L. Hopkin Middle 7th grade, Coral Cameron Kelly – Margaret L. Hopkin Middle 7th grade
  • San Juan District spellers were Jeraden Hurst – Alfred R. Lyman Middle 8th, Jade Bradford – Alfred R. Lyman Middle 7th and Ollie Jeppesen – Blanding Elementary 5th grade
  • Pinnacle Canyon Academy spellers were Kaiden Chavira – 8th grade, Colton Day – 6th grade and Louie Martinez – 5th grade.

The Scripps Bee is the nation’s largest and longest-running educational promotion, administered on a not-for-profit basis by The E.W. Scripps Company and 291 sponsors in the United States, Europe, Canada, New Zealand, Guam, Jamaica, The Bahamas, Ghana, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and American Samoa. The Bee’s purpose is to help students improve their spelling, increase their vocabularies, learn concepts, and develop correct English usage that will help them all their lives. It is broadcast on Bounce TV and Ion Television.

 


Quiz Bowls
Regional Quiz Bowl Tournaments
Southeast Education Service Center hosted its annual Region Quiz Bowls on March 21 and 22, bringing together middle school and high school teams from Carbon, Emery, Grand, and San Juan School Districts, as well as charter school Pinnacle Canyon Academy. The Quiz Bowl, held at USU Eastern in Price featured seven competing teams in the middle school division and five competing teams in the high school division.
 
In the middle school division, Margaret L Hopkin Middle School claimed 1st place honors, followed by 2nd place Mont Harmon Middle School and 3rd place Helper Middle School. These teams demonstrated exceptional knowledge and quick thinking, captivating the audience with their impressive performances. The competition was fierce, with each team showcasing their talents and abilities.
The high school division was equally competitive, with 1st place going to Emery High School, 2nd place to Carbon High School and 3rd place to Grand County High School. The winning teams displayed remarkable intellectual prowess and a extensive knowledge of multiple subjects. The atmosphere was charged with excitement as teams battled it out for the championship title.
 
SESC Quiz Bowl Coordinator, Joe Cha commended the students for their hard work and dedication, stating, "The Quiz Bowl is a testament to the academic excellence of our students. We are proud to provide a platform for them to showcase their talents and compete in a friendly and intellectually stimulating environment."
 
The Quiz Bowl not only highlights the academic achievements of students but also fosters a spirit of camaraderie and sportsmanship. The event serves as a reminder of the importance of education and the pursuit of knowledge. Individuals use their home institution username and password.  Eduroam is available at more than 12,000 locations worldwide, including more than 450 colleges, universities, and research facilities in the United States.
